MAC Fix+ Review: How to Use It

There are certain products that become so iconic that we stop asking what they actually do. MAC Fix+ is one of them.
For years, makeup artists and beauty lovers have sprayed it before makeup, after makeup, between layers and sometimes simply because the skin needed a little emotional support. Guilty.
But is MAC Fix+ truly a setting spray? Does it make makeup last longer? And why does it work beautifully for one person while another person’s makeup is melting by lunchtime?
As a licensed esthetician, beauty creator and someone who regularly tests makeup in Miami humidity, here is my honest answer:
The original MAC Fix+ can help prime, refresh and set makeup, but it is not the same kind of product as a heavy-duty makeup-locking spray.
MAC currently describes the original Fix+ as a hydrating, multitasking mist that primes, sets, refreshes and helps keep makeup looking fresh. The brand positions Fix+ Stay Over as the stronger option specifically designed to lock makeup in place for extended wear.
That difference matters, mami.
My quick verdict
Best for: Melting powder into the complexion, refreshing makeup and making a dry or overly matte base look more skin-like.
Not necessarily best for: Sweat-proofing, oil control, humid outdoor events or keeping a full face completely locked down all day.
Cristina’s verdict: Buy it for finish, not exclusively for longevity.
What does MAC Fix+ actually do?
The original MAC Fix+ is an alcohol-free facial mist designed to hydrate, prime, set and refresh makeup. MAC highlights ingredients such as green tea, chamomile, cucumber, vitamins and minerals.
Its real magic, in my experience, is how it helps different layers of makeup look more cohesive.
After foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush and powder, your face can sometimes look like each product is sitting in its own little apartment. Fix+ helps everything move into the same building.
A light mist can:
Reduce an overly powdery appearance
Make matte makeup look more natural
Help powders blend visually into cream products
Refresh makeup after several hours
Add moisture before complexion products
Intensify certain powder eyeshadows
It does not literally remove texture or permanently hydrate dehydrated skin. But visually, it can help the complexion appear softer, fresher and less flat.
How I use MAC Fix+ correctly
1. Before makeup for light hydration
After completing your skincare and sunscreen, lightly mist Fix+ over the face. Let it settle before applying primer or foundation.
This works best when your skin feels slightly dry or when your foundation tends to cling to dehydrated areas.
Do not drench the skin. Your complexion should feel refreshed, not wet.
2. After powder to remove the “cake”
This is my favorite use.
Once you have applied setting powder, bronzer and blush, spray Fix+ from a comfortable distance and allow the mist to fall evenly over the complexion.
Let it dry naturally for a few seconds. Then, when the skin is almost dry, gently press everything together with a clean damp sponge.
Press—do not drag.
This helps soften excess powder without disturbing the base underneath.
3. Between thin layers of makeup
For a smoother base, you can use a very light mist between major makeup steps:
Apply primer and foundation.
Mist lightly and let it settle.
Add concealer and cream products.
Set only the areas that need powder.
Mist again to bring the finish back to life.
The key is using small amounts. Too much liquid between every layer can cause certain formulas to separate.
4. To refresh makeup later in the day
Before adding more powder, check whether your makeup actually needs powder—or whether it simply looks dry and tired.
Blot away excess oil first. Then apply a light mist of Fix+ and gently press over any textured areas with a sponge.
This can revive makeup without piling fresh powder on top of old powder. We are refreshing the face, not building a lasagna.
5. To intensify powder eyeshadow
Apply powder eyeshadow to your brush first, then mist the brush lightly with Fix+.
This can make shimmer, metallic and duochrome shadows appear more reflective and intense.
Avoid soaking the brush or spraying directly into the eyeshadow pan repeatedly, since too much moisture can affect the texture of the product.
Is MAC Fix+ good for dry skin?
It can be a great finishing product for dry or dehydrated-looking makeup because it helps reduce that visibly powdery finish.
However, Fix+ does not replace a real skincare routine.
Dry skin will still benefit from:
A gentle cleanser
A hydrating serum or essence
A moisturizer suited to the skin
Daily sunscreen
Thin, flexible layers of complexion makeup
Think of Fix+ as the final stylist, not the entire glam team.
Is it good for oily skin?
Oily skin can absolutely use the original Fix+, especially when powder has made the complexion look too matte or heavy.
The issue is that the original version is not designed primarily for strong oil or sweat control.
For oily skin, I would:
Prep with lightweight skincare.
Apply a targeted gripping or mattifying primer.
Use thin layers of long-wear foundation.
Press powder into the T-zone.
Use Fix+ to soften the finish.
Finish with a dedicated locking spray when serious longevity is needed.
MAC’s Fix+ Matte is specifically marketed for shine control and resistance to sweat and humidity, making it a more targeted option for oily skin or warm-weather wear.
Who should buy MAC Fix+?
You may love the original Fix+ when:
Your makeup frequently looks powdery
You prefer a natural or skin-like finish
You wear matte foundation but do not want it to look flat
You need a midday complexion refresh
You enjoy metallic or shimmer eyeshadows
You want one mist that can be used before and after makeup

Who might want to skip it?
It may not be the priority when:
Your only concern is extreme makeup longevity
You need strong sweat or humidity resistance
You want noticeable oil control
Your current setting spray already melts powder and locks makeup effectively
Your budget only allows for one spray and durability is your biggest concern
In that case, I would prioritize a dedicated locking spray first.
MAC Fix+ became a professional makeup staple for a reason. It can take a complexion from visibly powdered to polished, fresh and skin-like in seconds.
But the secret is understanding its role.
I do not reach for the original Fix+ expecting it to freeze every layer of makeup through heat, sweat and a full workday. I reach for it because it helps makeup look more alive.
For serious longevity, I pair it with proper skin preparation, strategic powder and a dedicated locking spray.
Final rating: 8.5/10 for improving the finish of makeup.6.5/10 when used alone for extreme longevity.
